Different purposes can become just one, without losing their essence, within corporations

More than just a plan, your purpose is the reason you get up every day.

by Fabia Gobira*

The word “purpose” is very much in vogue these days. Searching in dictionaries, there are references to the “intention to do something, project, design”, or additionally, to what one seeks to achieve; objective, purpose, purpose. Among all definitions, there is a convergence: we talk about people and their dreams. In each human being, even in the coldest, we can identify a purpose, each one has a unique reason to exist. A good summary of what it is, after all, purpose is everything we do with the heart.

In the times we are living in, it is certain that when we do something with some kind of purpose, the impact is much greater for an individual or a collective. This topic has gained even more relevance in the pandemic scenario we are going through. Having a purpose can be a reason to get up every day, its foundation is empathy and love. As a professional in the Human Development area in large corporations, for more than 20 years, the vision of purpose I carry has been perfected.

In large companies, corporate goals were tied to personal goals. This did not just include financial matters, but people’s ambitions, wishes for happiness and passion. It became clear that, often, something that makes sense for the company does not make sense for the employee. With this perception, I started a research work. I set out to identify which were the real factors that could generate a transformation engine, that is, how we could achieve results not only individually, but also collectively. How to have a team engaged and committed to everyone’s success.

The answers started to come right from the first conversations, it was clear to perceive that each collaborator had a very own, unique and intimate purpose. Trying to implement a uniform development model for everyone could not meet the same. Finding out which individual factor would contribute to the collective was the best way to achieve results and develop happy people. Each one has a unique motivation to work, develop and create their own identity. For corporations, the challenge now is to unite their goals to the identification of individual purposes, reconciling the collectiveSingular purposes become a plural purpose  and generate impact and scale.

Applying this experience and learning to my career, I left large corporations to follow my purpose of supporting people and causes. This was the main factor that led to the creation of +ETC, my biggest life purpose. More than a company, it is a way of helping to turn dreams into reality, providing a collaborative environment, creating a plural model of Purpose. People with different purposes, who defend collective or particular causes, can form a participatory, alternative, free and inclusive community. This is my biggest challenge going forward.
