Antonia Bergamin opens her residence for Casa Vogue

Designed by the award-winning Isay Weinfeld, the architecture of the São Paulo house offers tranquility and welcome to the gallerist’s family, who exhibit their own art collection there.

Gallerist  Antonia Bergamin  opens the residence where she lives with her family, in São Paulo, for  Casa Vogue  in September. The project by award-winning architect  Isay Weinfeld  managed to balance the welcome of good living with the resident’s important art collection, by opting for spaces with high ceilings and glass that favor lighting and frame the vegetation around the property.

The famous painting from the series of flags by  Alfredo Volpi  (1896-1988) is among the main artistic works housed in the gallerist’s house. “Volpi almost never titled or put a date on his works. We know from records in exhibitions or in some cataloging. This one is from the 1970s,” he says.

The house’s various environments feature creations by artists such as Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato (1900 -1995), Cildo Meireles, Jac Leirner, José Resende, Joseph Beuys (1921 -1986), Lygia Clark (1920 -1988), Marcius Galan, Mira Schendel ( 1919 -1988), Paulo Nazareth, Paulo Roberto Leal (1946 -1991) and Tunga (1952 -2016), as well as furniture by names such as Joaquim Tenreiro (1906 -1992) and Guilherme Wentz.

Despite the strong presence of the works, Antonia highlights that there was a concern with balance so that the house would be comfortable to live in. “It’s my family home, not a gallery or a museum,” she says.

The collector and the gallerist joined the organization. Or rather, a little of both, but a little more of the resident. “I wanted it to make sense and it worked if you see how I hung the works in groups grouped together by periods and themes. But there is also the issue of space, as sometimes you have a certain piece and only one wall option to place it on, due to the size.” Not only a physical dimension, but, in some cases, an emotional one. Like those Volpi flags, a privilege of childhood in an environment in constant coexistence with beauty.
