May 16th is National Day to Combat and Prevent Thrombosis: Understand what it is and how to prevent this vascular disease

Although there are several minimally invasive treatments, the ideal is to act in order to prevent the disease.

Circulation problems are among some of the most common diseases, especially for older people, but they can also affect people of different ages. The vascular surgeon at Hospital Edmundo Vasconcelos, Vinicius Bertoldi, clarifies that vascular health is essential for a full and active life and for the quality of life of any person. The National Day to Combat and Prevent Thrombosis is celebrated on September 16th with the aim of raising awareness of the disease that has affected more than 420 thousand Brazilians in the last ten years. One of the main types is deep vein thrombosis.

“It occurs when a thrombus (blood clot) forms inside a vein, mainly in the lower limbs, interfering with normal blood flow. In some circumstances, this thrombus can “break free” from the vein and be carried by the circulation to the pulmonary arteries, leading to obstruction, a situation known as pulmonary embolism”, highlights the specialist.

The doctor points out that among the main symptoms of deep vein thrombosis are swelling, pain and sensitivity in the affected area, redness or heat in the skin over the vein, the appearance of dilated and visible veins and the feeling of heaviness or tiredness in the legs. “If thrombosis is suspected, the ideal is to seek medical help immediately. The doctor will evaluate the symptoms, carry out specialized tests and determine the best plan of action”, he explains.

According to him, some treatments can be done on an individual basis and may include the use of anticoagulants to prevent clot growth and reduce the risk of complications, graduated compression to improve blood flow and reduce swelling and, in some cases, even Even minimally invasive procedures may be recommended to remove or dissolve the clot.

Bertoldi explains that even with treatments available, the ideal is to act preventively to avoid thrombosis. “Stay active, avoid a sedentary lifestyle, hydrate properly and maintain a healthy weight. If you are in a risk group, talk to a doctor about specific prevention measures,” he concludes.
