Zelensky’s mistakes at the meeting with Trump: Ukraine’s diplomatic disarmament
Since the beginning of the war between Ukraine and Russia, Volodymyr Zelensky has been the leading figure of the Ukrainian resistance. His role as leader of a nation at war has given him the image of a determined and courageous statesman. However, in his recent meeting with Donald Trump, Zelensky made a fundamental mistake: he came diplomatically unarmed.
As a Slavic leader who embodies the spirit of national resistance, Zelensky has distinguished himself in the military and media spheres. But war is not only fought on the battlefield. Diplomacy is as crucial a weapon as conventional weapons, and Ukraine appears to have neglected this front.
Ukraine’s diplomatic blunder
Every country has a figure who, in some way, represents its diplomacy on the international stage. In the case of Ukraine, this diplomatic leadership has not yet been consolidated. While Zelensky has positioned himself as the spokesperson for the fight against the Russian invasion, he should have at his side a strong diplomat, capable of building lasting alliances and expanding support for the Ukrainian cause.
By meeting with Trump, the current US president, at the White House, Zelensky had a valuable opportunity to strengthen ties and secure support. However, his approach seemed more focused on military urgency than long-term strategy. He forgot that diplomacy is not just about asking for help, but also about building bridges and offering strategic counterparts. A country like the US will never interfere in a war without getting a significant return. This could be negotiated without the nation losing its autonomy.
Lessons from history
History offers notable examples of how diplomacy can redefine the destiny of a nation. France, for example, shone at the Congress of Vienna (1815), where, despite being defeated by Napoleon, it managed to maintain a prominent position in the European concert thanks to Talleyrand’s diplomatic skills. Brazil, in turn, has a respectable diplomatic tradition that has avoided major conflicts and consolidated its regional influence. The Vatican, with its ancient diplomacy, plays a crucial role in mediating conflicts and preserving world peace.
What can still be done
There is still time for Ukraine to change course. Zelensky must recognize that diplomacy is as vital as military strategy. Finding a figure to represent Ukraine diplomatically is essential to ensuring successful negotiations and more consistent support abroad.
Furthermore, partnerships with countries with a strong diplomatic tradition, such as France, Brazil and the Vatican, could increase the possibilities for resolving the conflict. Force is necessary in the defense of a country, but it is diplomacy that builds the future. If Ukraine wants to ensure its sovereignty and restructuring, it needs to act immediately to strengthen its diplomatic front.
