At a recent ceremony in Brasília, the commander of the Brazilian Army, General Tomás Paiva, expressed concern about the increase in defense investments around the world. He stressed that Brazil must maintain “increased attention” to protect its citizens and national assets, especially in the face of “hybrid, diffuse and multidimensional threats” that characterize the current geopolitical scenario.
Growth of global military budgets
The increase in military spending is not exclusive to Brazil. In 2024, global defense spending reached US$2.46 trillion, with projections of growth to US$2.68 trillion in 2025.
- United States – The defense budget for 2025 is estimated at approximately $893 billion, representing a significant increase over previous years
- European Union – EU member states increased their defense spending by more than 30% between 2021 and 2024, reaching €326 billion in 2024, around 1.9% of EU GDP
- China – Announced a 7.2% increase in its defense budget for 2025, totaling 1.784 trillion yuan (approximately $249 billion)
- Poland – Raised its defense spending from 2.7% of GDP in 2022 to 4.2% in 2024, with projections to reach 4.7% in 2025
Brazil’s position
The budget of the Brazilian Ministry of Defense for 2025 is R$ 136.45 billion, representing a real increase of 0.8% compared to 22. Although modest, this increase reflects the need for modernization and preparation in the face of changes in the international scenario.
General Paiva emphasized the importance of a national defense prepared to face modern threats and highlighted the need for active diplomacy in conjunction with the Armed Forces to guarantee national independence and contribute to the peaceful resolution of international conflicts.
Concluded
The global increase in military spending signals a shift in international security priorities. For Brazil, this represents both a challenge and an opportunity to strengthen its national defense and reaffirm its commitment to regional peace and stability.
