Eat Well to Live Better: What Harvard Discovered About Healthy Longevity

Study reveals that a diet based on natural foods, such as rice and beans, may be the secret to healthy aging

One of the most comprehensive studies ever conducted on healthy longevity was recently published by Harvard University (USA). The study, conducted in partnership with two other renowned institutions, the University of Copenhagen (Denmark) and the University of Montreal (Canada), followed more than 100,000 adults for 30 years and concluded that adopting a diet rich in vegetables, whole grains and minimally processed foods can be decisive in aging with greater physical, cognitive and emotional health.

According to the researchers, the most effective diets included fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, unsaturated fats and whole grains – such as rice. Foods of animal origin in moderate quantities, such as fish and some dairy products, also proved beneficial, especially when associated with a minimum intake of ultra-processed foods. The most surprising result was the finding that it is possible to reach 70 years of age without serious chronic diseases if one has a balanced and natural diet throughout life.

Nutritionist  Dr. Aline Maldonado , a specialist in clinical nutrition and consultant for  Josapar  – owner of the brands  Tio João  and  Meu Biju  – highlights that the traditional Brazilian dish with rice and beans is one of the most complete combinations from a nutritional point of view.

“When consumed together, these foods complement each other perfectly. Rice is a source of healthy carbohydrates, B vitamins and minerals such as manganese and selenium; while beans provide vegetable proteins, iron, zinc, fiber and antioxidants. This combination provides all the essential amino acids to the human body and directly contributes to the proper functioning of the organism, preventing nutritional deficiencies common in the aging process,” he explains.

According to her, rice and beans can and should be present in daily main meals, including dinner. “It is a democratic, accessible and extremely versatile duo, which helps regulate blood sugar, promotes satiety and improves intestinal transit. In addition, regular consumption contributes to cardiovascular health, weight control and the balance of intestinal microbiota, a key factor for immunity and mental health”, adds the specialist.

The nutritionist also draws attention to the risks of consuming ultra-processed foods, highlighted as villains not only by Harvard, but by several recent studies.

“Products containing artificial dyes, such as erythrosine red and brilliant blue, have been associated with behavioral disorders, neurological changes and increased inflammation in the body. The most worrying thing is that these additives are present precisely in products aimed at children, such as candies, snacks, colored yogurts, cold cuts and sausages, which leads to early exposure to potentially harmful substances. Avoiding these ingredients from childhood can bring significant health benefits throughout life and allow people to age better,” he warns.

The good news, according to Dr. Aline, is that the key to healthy aging lies in simple, consistent habits. Choosing fresh foods, preparing meals at home and valuing natural ingredients, such as rice and beans, can make all the difference in the present and in the future.
